New speaker meeting: Michael T. Heaney, "The Scottish Independence movement," online, Wed 19 May 2021 at 6:10 pm CDT.
Reading link here to Heaney's 2020 article on the contentious politics of 'Scoxit.' This timely event happens following the 6 May elections, in which the Scottish national Party (SNP) gained a majority with its independence partners, the Scottish Greens. The stage is set for demands for "IndyRef2" and a confrontation with the UK Conservative and Unionist Party, which has at stake not only subsidies and sovereignty -- but also major airfields and naval bases (including nuclear submarines) in the deep water ports of Scotland. Heaney will join us from the University of Glasgow, where he is a Research Fellow. He holds the PhD from the University of Chicago, and has published widely on political and social movements.
