Dr. Douglas C. Peifer is a professor in the US Air War College’s Department of Strategy.

He holds the PhD, Modern European and German History (UNC Chapel Hill, 1996); MA, Modern European and German History (UNC at Chapel Hill, 1991); BA, History and Economics (Miami U. of Ohio, 1985).

He served as a junior officer aboard the Sixth Fleet flagship USS Belknap CG-26 in the 1980s, and then took up the study of history and international affairs full time.

His studies focused on modern diplomatic and military history with a special interest in the nexus between strategy, history, international politics, and culture.

His books are Hitler’s Deserters: Breaking Ranks with the Wehrmacht (Oxford UP, 2025); Choosing War (Oxford UP, 2016); Genocide, Airpower, and Intervention (Air UP, 2008); and The Three German Navies (UP of Florida, 2002).

His more than twenty articles and chapters have appeared in OrbisThe Journal of Military History, Strategic Studies Quarterly, War in History, War and Society, Contemporary European History, European Security, and The German Studies Review.

An avid traveler, Peifer is married to Elizabeth Bostick Peifer (also a speaker to ALWAC) and is the father of four sons.
